Speak up for Weeki Wachee’s Springs Protection Zone! FWC seeks public comment on the proposed Springs Protection Zone for Weeki Wachee Spring that will create a SPZ restricting beaching, mooring, anchoring and grounding of vessels on the spring run of the Weeki Wachee River extending from the spring boil within Weeki Wachee Springs State Park to the Rogers Park Boat Ramp. Background: Weeki Wachee River is the first major spring run in Florida being considered for a spring protection zone (SPZ). The original proposal for the SPZ was supported by Hernando County, the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the Department of Environmental Protection. However, this original proposal was weakened by Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission staff. So Florida Springs Council joined the Florida Native Plant Society, Sierra Club FL and local residents to ask FWC to approve the original proposal. FWC Commissioners listened and instructed staff to return at the next meeting in July with a stronger SPZ in line with our recommendations. Now, FWC is seeking public comment on the final proposal that is in line with our recommendations. Public comments are being accepted through June 30. Submit a comment to FWC today.
