2025 Legislative Session

2025 Legislative Session

The bad trash bill is headed back to the House Floor - We need you to contact your representative TODAY and urge them to protect local single-use container regulations and keep trash out of our waterways. We're asking our representatives to refuse to concur to the Senate’s amendment to HB 1609, which now includes the bad plastic preemption language from SB 1822/HB 565.

The house version of the plastic preemption bill, HB 565: Regulation of Auxiliary Containers, was stalled in the house - HB 565 was temporarily postponed by Representative Blanco and Chair Rizzo in its second committee stop back on April 1. Thanks to their courage and good sense, HB 565 was never heard again in any committee, a clear sign that the sponsor and House leadership understand that this is bad public policy that is bad for Floridians.

Now, the senate is trying to sneak the plastic preemption language across the finish line by adding it to a bill exclusively dealing with a local fight in Miami-Dade County over where to locate a waste incineration plant - HB 1609: Waste Incineration by Rep. Weinberger.

If you have already emailed or called your senator on HB 1609, now we need you to contact your representative and ask them to refuse to concur to the Senate's amendment or amend the bill to remove the plastic preemption language.

HB 1609 would remove more than a dozen local regulations across the state without providing another solution to regulate trash and plastic pollution. This is a very bad bill that jeopardizes Florida’s waterways.

Plastic pollution impacts Florida’s waters, harms wildlife, and contaminates our drinking water supply. HB 1609 is in direct contradiction to two state-funded studies about regulating trash and, if passed, it will result in more trash ending up in our local waterways. Our legislators need to hear from you about why this bill is dangerous for local economies, our communities and businesses, and the environment.
